Burnsville has and elected City Council consists of a mayor and four council members. All policy and legislative decisions are the responsibility of the council. The council delegates the administrative duties to a City Manager.

Planning Commission
The Burnsville Planning Commission is responsible for researching, reviewing and making recommendations on issues related to land use and development in the City. Economic Development Commission
The Economic Development Commission (EDC) is an advisory body to the City Council and the Economic Development Authority charged with the responsibility of researching, reviewing, and making recommendations on issues related to economic development.
